Identifying Contemporary Furniture

Certain terminologies are difficult to define and so is contemporary furniture. It is really very difficult telling just by looking at some piece of furniture whether it is classic, contemporary, or modern furniture. Experts may not find the task difficult to identify what they really are but for the average man it could be a real challenging task. While training on the exact categorization of furniture could help you, having knowledge about a few things could also help you at the first instance.

Just like any other art forms the furniture can be divided into several categories. Such categorization could be based on the designs and styles, material used or the make of the furniture. Both aesthetic as well as the utilitarian factors are taken into consideration when the classification of furniture is made. An important aspect of deciding whether the given piece is contemporary furniture is its age. All said and done the contemporary furniture is one of the denominators of history of mankind. It has aptly mirrored the progress that mankind so far has made. In fact furniture is in use since the first of the homes and habitations came into existence.

It could be cities, towns or rural habitations, but furniture has been one of the basic ingredients of daily use for human being. So how can you classify the contemporary furniture among the myriad of styles and designs all around you? Though experts differ widely on the periods to be taken into consideration, one of the widely accepted theorems is that any furniture that came into existence after the Second World War including the modern ones is contemporary.

Synonym for contemporary is current. They reveal and reflect the current trends. Thus contemporary styles are still being created. At the same time the wheel of time will wait for none and what is contemporary today is destined to become classic after the passage of time. Designers and craftsmen are always on the look out for new things with creative minds. There could be a lot of stylistic changes that might occur in any field at any given point of time. Contemporary furniture has also seen good deal of evolution since the Second World War. However it is also quite clear that the furniture that carries modern appearance can be safely included under this category. There may be some that look classical in design but if they are accepted in the flow of the current styles, they have to be classified as contemporary.

Perhaps the most useful method of identifying the contemporary furniture would be viewing those movies that were made way back in the 1960-80 era. Have you seen the film Dr. Stangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey? It was full of specimens of furniture that were supposedly futuristic. Of course they may not look that futuristic today but many modern furniture resemble them. Yet the designs they depict were particular to those times and the trends prevalent in the society.

In essence, they were just precursors to the modern day contemporary furniture.
